After quite a while, I got a break from work. We were in Salem to attend a function. But still the mind goes back to work. The last couple of months have been incredibly hectic and intense at the office.  Iam sometimes reminded about Bryan Dyson’s ( Former Coke CEO) speech, about juggling the five balls of life.

But the inertia of the mind is such that, when you are full of work related thoughts, it is difficult to break out of that milieu and focus somewhere else. And if you do break-out, it becomes difficult to focus back. I dont know if this is true for everyone; but I am more tired joining work after a vacation than normal. You are supposed to be rejuvenated, have a skip to your step and bring in fresh perspective. All I feel is, I have lost context of what was going on.

Does it make sense to take a break when you are in the flow? I honestly don’t know the answer . But I guess, if we are talking about a few days or even a few weeks, its fine. If it prolongs to months, the world will just pass by.

But my conflict still remains. How do you find the balance? Its easy to just get lost in what you are doing. But any distraction brings disharmony.

People talk of work-life balance. But in a practical world; what does that really mean? If you enjoy your work, is it ok to  carry on to the exclusion of everything else?  I suspect, there are stages in people’s lives. When you are young and unencumbered, you can put your everything into work. The early to late twenties. Once you have a family, one will need to start finding the balance. Its a bit of an irony because the more you gain experience, the more you can contribute. And that is precisely when you cannot focus on work so much!

Although a tangent; it is nature’s way of maintaining a balance. Ever wondered, that when we are young and can eat everything, we can hardly afford it? And when we are older and well provided for, we still cannot eat them – but now for health reasons!
Or ever wondered; why tasty food is not good for health and the nutritious ones are not so tasty?

On a slightly morbid note; the young drive fast and rash. As if they don’t have any time left. And the elder folks drive slow; really slow. As if they have all the time in the world.

I guess balance is always going to be a stretch target. Nature by its very nature has ordained every individual to only strive for it. Not attain it.
